Supervised Learning
A model trained on historically confirmed outcomes that scores new cases by their similarity to past examples.
Uses AIestablishedsupervised-ml
Supervised learning is the workhorse once an organisation has a labelled history worth learning from.
It earns its place when a decision is made often enough, and with clear enough past outcomes, that a model can rank new cases better than a fixed rule set.
Its central constraint is honest labels, not model choice, so check where the labels came from before trusting the score.
Without a real label history, this is the wrong technique to start with.
General strengths
- Combines many weak signals into a single ranked score.
- Adapts to new patterns when retrained on fresh outcomes.
- Produces a calibrated score that can be sized to an operational budget.
General limitations
- Requires a meaningful volume of confirmed labels to train and evaluate.
- Learns whatever bias is present in how past labels were assigned.
- Degrades quietly as behaviour drifts away from the training period.
Applied to business problems
Each of these is written for its own problem. The technique is shared, the solution is not.
- Alert triage scoringA model trained on investigator disposition history that reranks the alerts typology rules already produced, so a fixed investigator queue works the highest-value cases first.Transaction Monitoring
- Denial risk scoring before submissionA model trained on the organisation's own submitted claims and the insurer's response to each that ranks claims which passed every edit by their likelihood of denial, so billers review the riskiest ones before they are sent.Claims Denied by Insurers
- Persistence risk score to order advisers' outreachA model trained on past students' records that estimates each current student's chance of not returning next term, used only to order the outreach list within an adviser's caseload, built without race, measured by group, and never shown as a label on the student's record.Students Leaving Before They Finish Their Degree
- Claim risk scoringA model trained on confirmed investigation outcomes that ranks open claims by fraud risk for a fixed investigator queue.Claims Fraud Detection
- Maintenance log triageA text classifier trained on CMMS work order free text that extracts fault type, affected component, and likely failure mode to supply cleaner labels for the other solutions.Unplanned Equipment Downtime
- Risk-ranked referrals for caseworker reviewA model trained on past review and investigation outcomes that ranks new claims or advance requests by the risk of fraud, and refers the highest-risk ones, mixed with a random control group, to a caseworker who sees neither the score nor that a model chose the case.Benefit Overpayments From Fraud and Error
- Pooled demand model with quantile forecastsOne gradient boosted model trained across many products and stores at once, using promotions, price, and calendar features, that outputs demand quantiles for the products where the baseline forecast is weakest.Empty Shelves and Excess Stock
- Inspection targeting modelA model trained on the utility's own field inspection results that ranks premises by their likelihood of an irregularity, so each inspection campaign visits the premises most likely to have theft or a faulty meter, with a share of random visits to correct for where inspectors used to go.Electricity Theft and Non-Technical Losses
